DIY Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging

Easy no-sew banner for a Valentine's Day wall hanging -- so easy to customize for any holiday @Remodelaholic (1)

Hello Remodelaholic readers! Colleen here from Lemon Thistle, home to DIY, home decor, printables, and parties. I’m happy to be back today sharing this fun DIY Valentine’s Day Wall Hanging. Valentine’s Day isn’t a holiday I typically do a lot of decorating for. This is mostly because the decorations can be so darn tacky! Over the past couple years I’ve slowly been creating my own collection of decor for the holiday that I’m happy to have up on my walls and around my home. This wall hanging is no different- I love it! I especially love the big impact for a small price point. That’s the whole point of DIY… isn’t it? Awesome stuff for less! Oh, did I mention this guy is no-sew? Bonus!

Here’s what you’ll need to make your own:

  • Drop cloth or other sturdy canvas fabric
  • Scissors
  • Hot glue gun and glue
  • Dowels (2)
  • Iron on hemming tape
  • Iron
  • Cricut Explore Air or other cutting machine (or a craft knife and patience!)
  • Digital template (read on for more information)
  • Transfer paper (double the size of your template)
  • Acrylic paint
  • Foam spouncer (foam paint dabber)

The first step is to create your template. I did this in two parts. I hand lettered the ‘MUAH’ and digitized it. I’ve got that for you to use if you like- snag it right here. The lips are a free graphic from Pic Monkey. I just placed that overlay on a translucent background and saved it as a PNG. I uploaded these both to my Cricut design software, stretching them to the size I liked before selecting ‘cut’ for the function. Load your cutting mat with transfer tape (the sticky layer on top) and set your dial to something between vinyl and paper.

It takes quite a while to cut because of all the detail in the lips. While it’s working away, go ahead and cut your drop cloth or sturdy canvas to size. I cut it the same width as my dowel (to account for hemming) and a little longer than I thought I would want, you will be able to trim it up later. I love using drop cloth for wall hangings- especially if I’m painting them. Since they’re designed not to let paint seep through, they are so easy to work with! I also love the natural color. When it’s cut to size, use your hemming tape to turn the edges over and press with an iron. I often leave the edges raw on drop cloth projects but decided this one would look nice a bit more polished.

When your cutting machine (or steady hand!) is all done it’s magic, use a weeder or your finger nails to remove the image, leaving a stencil. When you’re done this, take another piece of transfer paper/tape and smooth it over your design (just as you would when transferring vinyl to a wall). Use your fingers to firmly press all over, making sure the tape picks up the tiny little bits. Then, peel off your backing and place it on your drop cloth- press firmly. Take your time peeling back the top layer of transfer tape, making sure you don’t lose any of the details. You could definitely use vinyl for the stencil as well. I find the transfer tape from Expressions Vinyl really affordable so use it for all my stencils.

Now it’s time to get painting! This was the fun part for me. I used acrylic paint for this. The color I chose is called Alizarin Crimson from Studio 7 and I really love how bold and rich it came out. My hubby actually asked me if it was real lipstick I was using. I’ll take that as a sign I chose right! When you’re painting, using a spouncer and slowly dabbing will help you get into the weave of the fabric without getting any paint underneath your stencil. I went over each area a couple times to make sure I had even coverage. When you’re happy with it, peel back your stencil and reveal your masterpiece! Make sure you get all those little bits of stencil.

Let this dry while you use hot glue to adhere the dowels, wrapping the fabric around the dowel to mimic it being sewn on. The dowel makes for easy hanging as well!

That’s all there is to it. I really love the way it turned out, it’s natural elements match my decor and the crimson adds a punch of color that doesn’t scream like most of the Valentine’s decor I’ve seen. I’m thinking of making a banner like this for every holiday (Saint Pat’s is just around the corner!) to hang in our entrance way (if we ever finish that renovation!!). I’d love to hear if you decorate for Valentine’s Day.
